University of Cape Town

Univcapetown

Affectionately known as the Mother City, Cape Town was founded in 1652 and is South Africa’s oldest city. Cape Town is rated as one of the most beautiful cities in the world with a backdrop of flat-topped Table Mountain juxtaposed by the sweep of the Atlantic Ocean in the foreground. You can hike or take a cable-car ride up Table Mountain to enjoy the breathtaking view of the city and peninsula, take a ferry to the historic Robben Island, or visit the Cape of Good Hope. The University of Cape Town (UCT) is South Africa’s oldest university and one of the continent’s leading teaching and research institutions. UCT has six faculties, over 60 departments and offers a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate study. The main teaching campus, known as the Upper Campus, is located on the slopes of Devil's Peak and contains, in a relatively compact site, the faculties of Science, Engineering, Commerce, and Humanities (except for the arts departments). Upper Campus is centered on UCT’s iconic Jameson Hall, the location for graduation and other ceremonial events, as well as many examinations. Upper Campus is also home to the Chancellor Oppenheimer library, which holds the majority of the University's 1.3 million volume collection.

Academic Info

The academic departments of UCT are divided into six faculties: Commerce, Engineering and the Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, and Science. The multidisciplinary Center for Higher Education Development rates on a level equal to the faculties. You may select courses from a wide range of departmental offerings across the majority of UCT faculties. As scheduling allows you can combine courses offered in different departments and faculties. You will typically select the majority of your courses at the 200-level, although a 100 or 300-level course may be taken as well.

    • Beginning in the Spring 2011 semester, Interstudy will now be accepting applications based on two academic tracks at UCT: Humanities (includes students who wish to take 2 or more humanities courses) and Non-Humanities (includes students who wish to take 0 to 1 courses in the humanities and the remainder in the Commerce, Engineering, and/or Science Faculties).
    • Preferred application deadlines are: October 15th for Spring semester and April 1st for Fall semester. Call for availability after these dates.
    • At the time of application a student must have attained a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.  Students should hold a Junior or Senior class standing at the time of study.
    • Interstudy students can combine courses offered in different departments and faculties as scheduling allows.
    • Students should select the majority of their courses at the 200 level. An additional 100 or 300 level course may be taken also.
    • Standard full-time credit load: 14-16 U.S. semester-hour credits. The total number of courses will vary depending on the credit weighting of each course.
